Lately we have been thinking about what defines a person. The distinct aspects of a person that leave a lasting impression on those around them. Are we defined by our profession, the city we live in, or our physical features and attributes? Consider this, perhaps a person is defined by something much deeper, under the surfaceโa person can be defined by their roots.
Your roots are all encompassing. They bring together all of the aspects of you, and they represent a beautiful dichotomy combining your past and future. What do we mean? Your roots are both your lineage, your ancestry, and your values, your beliefs. Your roots can inform how you show up and move through the world, the type of person you are and the one you are becoming. When youโre rooted, you stick true to your character, and at the same time honor where youโve come from.
Exploring your roots gives you a chance to uncover what you truly care about in this world and the values that guide how you interact. At the same time, your roots hold the stories of the past, which can influence where you are going in the future. Your physical body, your memories, and even your hair hold onto these precious stories.
Try getting in touch with your roots. Set aside a few minutes to daydream about your favorite memories of the past. What emotions come up as you think about where you were, what happened, and which loved ones were there? Think about the specific moments where you felt guided, or maybe you could connect with those who have passed. Consider the values held by those who have paved the way for you. Digging into your roots gives credence to those before you, and sheds light on whatโs to come.
